EuskOOS is the Basque coastal operational oceanography system operated by Euskalmet along with the expert advice of AZTI technology centre. This system envisages three purposes:

  • providing an accurate description of current sea conditions along the Basque coastline;
  • offering ongoing forecasts of future sea conditions; and
  • supplying ocean-meteorological products to Basque coastal users.

Oceans are key climate factors as well as a source of oxygen, water, food, energy and raw materials and a platform for tourism, transport and commerce. Our future depends on the good condition of the oceans and their capacity to facilitate goods and services. Acquiring knowledge and information for different marine environment uses, resource exploitation and sustainable management requires advance monitoring technologies. Forecasting extreme natural phenomena, marine spatial planning, rescue operations as well as ecosystem and climate modelling depend on ocean monitoring and efficient operational oceanography systems. To do so, access to high quality and resolution data is needed so data can be shared non-stop from different sources. These exchanges are organised at different international collaboration levels.

Part of a global effort

 goos GOOS: Global Ocean Observing System: GOOS is a permanent global system for the observation, modelling and analysis of marine and ocean variables to maintain operational oceanography services worldwide. GOOS provides accurate descriptions of the current condition of oceans, including live resources, ongoing forecasts of future sea conditions with the maximum possible advance, as well as the basis for climate change forecasts. http://www.ioc-goos.org/
 eurogoos_logo EuroGOOS: European Global Ocean Observing System: EuroGOOS is an international non-profit organisation committed to operational oceanography at European level within the Global Ocean Observation System (GOOS) context. Established in 1994 as an informal association, since February 2013, it has been set up as an international non-profit organisation in Belgium (EuroGOOS AISBL) increasing its efficiency and improving the presence of its members in the EC and other institutions of the UE as well as international bodies. http://eurogoos.eu/
 IBIROOS IBIROOS: Ireland-Biscay-Iberia Regional Operational Oceanographic System: IBI-ROOS aims to create an Operational Oceanographic organisation operated by members from countries bordering the Iberia-Bay of Biscay-Ireland sea area, co-operating to develop and implement ocean observation systems in the IBI-ROOS area, with operational services and products. http://www.ibi-roos.eu/
